Breath By Samuel Beckett
I am Anjali Rathod and I am a student of Dept. of English , MK Bhavnagar University. This Thinking Activity is assigned by Barad sir about Breath (short play) by Samuel Beckett. I am going to make a video on ‘Breath’ By Samuel Beckett.
'Breath' is a 1969 work that was specially written for the theatrical revue Oh! Calcutta! The revue was organized by theatre critic Kenneth Tynan and brought together a host of famous people, including John Lennon and Sam Shepard. The shortest play in the world is probably by Samuel Beckett
Curtain
1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold for about five seconds.
2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold about five seconds.
3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in I) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold for about five seconds.
Beckett adds some notes:
Rubbish. No verticals, all scattered and lying. Cry. Instant of recorded vagitus. Important that two cries be identical, switching on and off strictly synchronised light and breath. Breath. Amplified recording.

The Play contains major three things: Cry, Breath and Light. In my video I tried to represent cry as a Spring , which is also the season when trees, plants, and flowers start to bud, grow and bloom. So, here I tried to connect when cry with Spring has started when the new leaves bloom. Cry is connected with the new born of leaves. During spring, trees start growing again and sprout new leaves.
Now coming to breath, breath is representing life of Leaves and same with Humans also we can’t live without breath. And light represents death. Autumn is also called fall season and the trees shed their leaves during the autumn. Leaves fall represents death. Life is in between cry, breath and light as the same as spring , breath and autumn.
I have used Leaf as a theme to represent this play : Breath.
Thank You... .
